Details of events to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar have been announced on what would have been Lord Nelson's 246th birthday.

2005 Nelson Museum, Monmouth The permanent Nelson displays will be open throughout the year along with special displays of important collections of Nelson ceramics, letters and other documents.
2005 Nelson, the Victory and Battle of Trafalgar, Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth The Museum's award-winning new galleries with displays on Nelson, his navy and Trafalgar will be open throughout the year.
2005 HMS Victory, Portsmouth Nelson's flagship, fully restored to her 1805 condition, will be open to the public with special programmes throughout the year.
2005 Trafalgar Tree planting, Britain and Northern Ireland Oak trees will be planted by primary and secondary school children across the country to commemorate the Trafalgar bicentenary, in partnership with the Woodland Trust. 6 - 16 January London Boat Show, ExCeL, London Visitors to the show can savour the boats of their dreams - large or small. Last year's event included a Watersports Lifestyle Village, the first ever Virgin Radio UK Indoor Windsurfing Championships in the 1,500 seat Indoor Watersports Arena, and the Inland Waterways Attraction complete with life-size jetties and a real-ale waterside pub there was something for everyone. 1 - 28 February Trafalgar Crocus Carpet, Portsmouth Cathedral Portsmouth Cathedral will be extending its Millennium Crocus Carpet with further crocus planting to mark the Trafalgar bicentenary year. The Trafalgar Crocus Carpet will be planted (in Autumn 2004) along the High Street side of the Cathedral in Old Portsmouth following the route probably taken by Admiral Nelson on his way from the George Hotel, in the High Street, to join HMS 'Victory' before his departure to the Battle of Trafalgar. Donations towards the cost of this project of £5 or over - to mark for example a family anniversary - will be recorded in a special book. This will be on view in February 2005 when the Trafalgar Crocus Carpet will be in bloom. There will also be a Trafalgar Crocus Carpet Celebratory Weekend at the Cathedral at that time. 13 March Plymouth Philarmonic Choir perform Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony, Plymouth Pavilions The choir has around 160 experienced singers and usually produces three classical concerts each year in Plymouth. Uniformed Sea Cadets and Cadet Royal Marines have been invited to join the choir during the performance at the Pavilions, which holds a capacity of 1400. 25 - 28 March Lancaster Easter Maritime Festival and Georgian Trafalgar Victory Fair This maritime festival includes seasongs and shanty concerts, nautical dramas and many more activities. 10 - 11 June Round the Island Yacht Race, Solent A special yacht race around the Isle of Wight for the competitors of the Atlantic Challenge. 28 June International Fleet Review, the Solent This multi-national gathering of warships from over 35 countries will be joined by 20 significant merchant ships and over 80 tall ships will sail past Her Majesty The Queen and other Heads of State. This will be the biggest ever multinational gathering of ships.
28 June Son et Lumière, Solent Tall ships will be staging a re-enactment of a Napoleonic sea battle. Using theatrical techniques to dramatise the proceedings, with large screen displays and radio broadcasts so all can follow the action, there will be will be apposite music and the voices of Officers and men bringing into focus the human aspect of battle. The event will culminate in a firework display and a fly-past by RAF, Fleet Air Arm and Army aircraft. Viewing should be possible from Southsea, Gosport and the vicinity of Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
29 June Drumhead Ceremony, Portsmouth This traditional Drumhead Ceremony in the presence of VIPS is for maritime veterans of all nations and all conflicts of many campaigns, including the two Gulf Wars.

12 August - 11 September New Trafalgar Dispatch, Falmouth to London A symbolic recreation of the voyage in 1805 from Cape Trafalgar to Falmouth of Lt Lapenotière in HMS Schooner Pickle, and his subsequent drive by post-chaise to London to deliver Vice Admiral Collingwood's dispatch containing news of the victory and Nelson's death. The route will be identified permanently as The Trafalgar Way. There will be processions and celebrations along the way and in Spain and France, including a Trafalgar Ball, dinners, concerts and lectures.
4 - 9 September War at Sea in the Age of Sail Conference, Christchurch College, Oxford A residential conference looking at the naval context of Trafalgar - the ships, men and operations of the period. 13 - 14 September Nelson's Last Drive, Merton to Portsmouth A series of events marking Nelson's final drive from Merton to Portsmouth and his last walk through the town en route to Trafalgar.
16 September Thames Nelson Flotilla, London A symbolic recreation of Nelson's waterborne funeral procession from Greenwich to Whitehall. It is planned to gather the largest flotilla seen on the Thames in modern times with a view to entering the Guinness Book of Records. Vessel types expected include traditional Thames craft, Dunkirk little ships, City and Guilds and Livery Company barges, and also HMS Victory's cutter and the Jubilant, which resembles the original funeral barge.
